The City of Douglas will be working on various projects over the coming week.  The work is being completed by the City of Douglas Public Works Department and is part of the Mayor and Council’s ongoing infrastructure improvement program.

The City of Douglas has contracted Sunwestern Contractors Inc. for the Water & Wastewater System Improvements Phase II Project.  Water main installation will take place at:  1) the intersection of 15th Street from San Antonio Avenue to Washington Avenue.   Wastewater improvements will begin at:  1) 5th Street to 6th Street and Florida Avenue  2) 6th Street from Florida Avenue to Cochise Avenue.  These streets will be closed to through traffic during working hours.  Construction will continue through November 14, 2008.  Please be alert to more detailed information regarding street closures and the construction detours.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in support of the U.S. Border Patrol continues re-grading and lining the channel bottom and slopes with concrete as well as doing service road improvements.  This work is taking place on International Avenue between J Avenue to A Avenue and will continue through August 2009.  Please continue to be alert to area detours and barriers.

Monday, July 14th  through Friday, July 18th  curbing work continues Florida Avenue between 8th street and 6th Street.  Striping and power-washing also continues in the downtown area.  Earthwork and drainage realignment work is still in process on Chino Road.  Please be alert of detours in these areas.

Please be alert of detours in these areas.  Fire Hydrant maintenance and water system maintenance continues throughout the city.  Caution should be taken when driving or walking near or around an area where city personnel are flushing & testing fire hydrants.

There will also be other miscellaneous concrete repairs, pothole patching, and graffiti cleanup throughout the city.  If you should have any problems with water and/or sewer services on the weekend or a holiday, please contact the Douglas Police Department at 364-8422 and staff on call will be dispatched to your residence.

" Why doesn't the city plan better for these improvements? Year after year they start these projects around school zones just as school is about to start. It just adds to the congestion in these areas and creates an unsafe environment for the children. I'm sure the planning of these improvements is done way ahead of time. While planning these inprovements I feel closer attention should be paid to school zones and when the school year starts and ends. "
