A former Douglas resident was deployed to the Middle East with the 9th Engineering Support Battalion, which is stationed at Camp Hansen in Okinawa.

Witkowski

Lance Corporal Jesse-John Fernandez Witkowski joined the Marines through the Early Entry program at the age of 17. Fernandez quickly excelled in all areas, especially in marksmanship. He holds the highest marks as Expert Rifleman in both his training platoon and his current battalion.

Fernandez was born in Douglas and graduated from Bisbee High School. Before his deployment, Fernandez enjoyed two weeks leave with his friends and family.

The highlight of this trip home was the reunion with all his siblings, which gave his mother, Beth, the opportunity to have all six children together for one special day.
