With parts of 15th Street closed for water and waste water improvements this week, parents and students will find that traditional drop off points in front of the Douglas High School will not be available.

Xavier Zaragoza/Douglas Dispatch Construction on water and wastewater lines is causing difficulty for students registering for classes at the high school.

The City of Douglas has been making improvements to some of the lines and as a result has had to close off parts of 15th Street, which is a major throughway for many parents with school age children.

“The construction will have a big impact on the school in that parents will not be able to drop off students directly in front of the school,” said Bonnie Lopez, principal of DHS.

Stopping in the middle of the street to drop off students, though, is illegal and offenders will be cited. The drop off points are clearly designated to avoid traffic problems.

Anticipating the challenge of a closed street, security at DHS has devised an alternate route for parents and students, Lopez said.

Lopez said that maps with the alternate routes will be made and distributed.

“We will also have school staff directing traffic toward the drop off points,” she said.

Other schools such as Carlson Elementary School, Huber Middle School and Omega Alpha, all of which are located on 15th Street, will also be affected.

Water and wastewater improvements at the school areas are scheduled to be completed by Friday. The street is scheduled to be opened by Monday.

" Why doesn't the city plan better for these improvements? Year after year they start these projects around school zones just as school is about to start. It just adds to the congestion in these areas and creates an unsafe environment for the children. I'm sure the planning of these improvements is done way ahead of time. While planning these inprovements I feel closer attention should be paid to school zones and when the school year starts and ends. " "
