Change makes high school classes an hour longer

High school students day just increased by one hour after a change in the interpretation of the law issued by the state.

The school day will now go until 2 p.m. daily after a note from the state said that a class period is made up of 60 minutes. The high school had been running 100 minute blocks every other day, or only 50 minutes per class period. Now each block will be two full hours, 120 minutes, long.

Many schools throughout the state will now be forced to alter their school schedules just prior to the beginning of classes due to the change.

The high school began notifying students by phone last night.

The new school schedule will go as follows:

• 0 Period - 6:30 - 7:20 a.m.

• 1-2 period - 7:25 - 9:25 a.m.

• Freshman Math Module break - 8:27-9:32 a.m.

• Passing Period - 9:25-9:30 a.m.

• 3-4 period - 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

• Lunch - 11:30-Noon

• 5-6 period - Noon-2 p.m.

Tutoring will begin at 2:15 p.m.

It is still unclear how the change will affect athletic practice schedules and those high school students attending Cochise College.

" When i was a student at DHS i remember classes getting out at 3:00 so i don't see why kids today need more free time out of school it just gives them more time to get into trouble. "

" Im very glad that they changed the time schedule because we dont have enough time in class to have work. hopefully by changing the schedule we wont have homework, because we actually dont have time for homework. some of us work after school and get out around 9 or10 and what time do we have for homework none....
as i said it a good thing that they did but please dont allow homework for any class...
as you can see, it sort of affected us in our jobs but in the other part we are having more education... "
