A 13-year-old Pirtleville boy shot and killed his mother Friday afternoon after arguing with her earlier that day.

The boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was detained at the Cochise County jail. He was later transported to juvenile detention in Sierra Vista, said Carol Capas, the spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department.

The mother was transported to Southeast Arizona Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

According to Capas, the boy’s parents left their home, located at the 2500 block of Oak Avenue, sometime after the boy and the mother had argued. When his parents returned, the boy shot his mother.

At about 4:19 p.m. sheriff’s deputies received the call of the injured woman. Sheriff’s deputies are continuing the investigation.

" This is a very bad tragedy. My heart goes out to the families. The little boy is in our prayers this is possibley going to be very hard for him to live with if not the hardest. I really wish Douglas would bring in some mentoring programs for the youth of Douglas like the boys and girls club. "

" OK. You people need to stop blaming video games and tv. Why don't you blame books too, while you're at it? If anything, it's books that fully immerse the reader into that world they're participating in, page for page. Yes, let's rid the world of all violent tv programs, video games, and books. No more classic literature. No more art. I suppose no Bible either...
Obviously, blaming video games and tv makes no sense, or else there would be a murder in every other household. Yes, it's a tragedy. But put the blame where it truly belongs. Home. "

" Oh get over it! A 12 yr old boy just doesn't shoot his mother just because. Some very bad had to have taken place so that a 12yr old boy could have done this. No one knows if this boy was being abused or what was going on in that house. Learn the facts and then start talking. Typical Douglas... "

" Events like these are indeed tragic. We cannot squarely place blame on TV and video games for an event like this, because today's parents rely on these activities to distract kids and in effect act as daycare so they can go about their own lives in peace. Maybe we can blame the war and idea that we can settle our disagreements with violence and force, rather than dialogue and diplomacy. All our hearts go out to this family. We can blame the social distancing from our youth, in the home and in society, for events like this. "
