BISBEE — Two men charged with killing four people in California are still being held in the Cochise County Jail, but efforts are under way to try to extradite them to the state.

The men are fighting extradition to California. They appeared in Cochise County Superior Court in Bisbee on Thursday for a review hearing on their extradition status.
Deputy County Attorney Gregory Johnson informed the court that California officials recently sent paperwork to Arizona and it should be received later this week or early next week. Gov. Janet Napolitano will review the material and then make a decision on whether to grant the extradition request.
The men are being held on $1 million bond each. The County Attorney’s Office filed a motion to hold them without bond as a result of a request from officials in California. Gilda Terrazas, of the county’s public defender’s office, who is representing the men, objected.
Judge James Conlogue said at this time he is unable to make an evidentiary finding to hold them without bond. He scheduled a subsequent review hearing for Sept. 5. He said he hopes Napolitano will make a decision on the case prior to that date.
Terrazas said if Napolitano grants the extradition, she plans to file a petition for a writ of habeas corpus to determine if the men are being imprisoned illegally.
Mexican immigration authorities escorted the men to the Douglas Port of Entry on June 28. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers determined the men were wanted in the murder case and turned them over to Douglas police for processing.
The court hearing was held in the Cochise County Jail instead of the courthouse due to security concerns.
A Korean language interpreter was present.
