Authorities in Mexico probe recent deaths

CANANEA, Sonora — Mexican authorities are investigating the deaths of nine individuals whose bodies were discovered here during the past month.


Five bodies were found last week and another four bodies were located in July, according to newspapers in Naco, Cananea and Agua Prieta. The identities of three of them are still unknown.

Three people were found dead last week near a ranch along the highway between Cananea and Naco, according to El Mirador of Naco, Las Noticias de la Frontera of Agua Prieta and Proyeccion of Cananea.

The papers contain conflicting information regarding the names of the three deceased people.

Proyeccion reported they are identified as Gustavo Orlando Hernandez Escupinichi, 26, Daniel Leon Montoya, 26, and Jesus Ignacio Martinez Miranda, 50. They are natives of Cananea.

El Mirador and Las Noticias de la Frontera reported those three victims are Gustavo Orlando Bernal Escupinichi, 26, Daniel Leon Montoya, 26, and Jesus Ignacio Martinez Marquez, 50.

It is believed the three individuals went missing in recent weeks, according to El Mirador and Las Noticias de la Frontera. The bodies apparently sustained wounds from firearms. Bullet casings were located nearby.

Also last week, two more bodies were discovered burned inside the trunk of a burned 2007 Honda Accord along the highway between Cananea and Agua Prieta. The vehicle had an Arizona license plate and was reported stolen, according to El Mirador and Las Noticias de la Frontera.

Proyeccion, El Mirador and Las Noticias de la Frontera reported the two individuals are Luis Alonso Gonzalez Martinez, 21, and Luis Alberto Urias Miranda, 20. According to Proyeccion, they are natives of Cananea.

In July, four more bodies were located on another Cananea ranch, according to Proyeccion and El Clarin of Agua Prieta.

El Clarin and Proyeccion reported one of the individuals is Juan Carlos Sanchez Alvarez. The 27-year-old disappeared in March of 2007 in Agua Prieta. The identities of the other three individuals are not known. According to El Clarin, all four bodies showed signs of torture.
