Full of old-world grace, charm and, occasionally, fury, the Daystar Chamber Players present a face-to-face, quadraphonic experience of two violins, a viola and a cello at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at the Sierra Vista Community United Church of Christ. The concert is brought to Sierra Vista by Cochise College Cultural Events.
Directed by cellist Harvey Wolfe, the Daystar Chamber Players will present a classic program of quartets that is not to be missed. Violinists Carla Cantoupes and Mimi Papp are frequently heard in Tucson orchestras, as well as the New Orleans and Florida symphonies. Violist Christina Swanson is principal viola of the Arizona Opera orchestra. Dr. Swanson has viola performance degrees from the Eastman School of Music, the University of Michigan, and the University of Arizona, and has performed in numerous orchestras, including the Tucson Symphony, and held summer positions with music festivals in Aspen, Flagstaff, and Spoleto, Italy. Cellist Wolfe has performed with the Cleveland orchestra under George Szell, Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, Von Dohnanyi, Leonard Bernstein, Sir Georg Solti, and Herbert Von Karajan. He was also a member of the Houston symphony under Leopold Stokowski.
The program features a broad palette of colors, from charming Vienna [Haydn's quartet op 42 and Schubert's one-movement 'Quartetsatz'] to sun-drenched Spain [Turina's 'Oracion del Torero'] to the gentle brush-strokes of Gershwin's "Lullaby for String Quartet" and others.
Admission at the door is $5 for adults; children 16 and younger will be admitted free with an adult. For information, call (520) 515-8759, or email
