Ybarra’s daughter Stephanie and Grissy’s mother, Elvia, were on hand Tuesday to throw out the ceremonial first pitches.
An estimated 140 local women and teenagers, ages 16 and up, comprise the seven team league.
Each team will play 12 games between now and Sept 12. A post season tournament will take place Sept. 13.
Rochelle Munoz got the league started this year and is running it in conjunction with the men’s softball league which is under the direction of Dave Raber.
“I got the idea to start this league when I was umpiring the girl’s softball league,” she said. “I had a lot of women approaching me letting me know it had been a while since women got together and had a league of their own so I took it upon myself to get one started.”
Munoz said thanks to Raber’s help she was able to get enough women signed up to field a seven team league.
A lot after the deadline interest prevented Munoz from adding more teams.
“I’m hoping we can have a winter softball league,” she said. “With the help of Raber plus the rest of the women in the league I’m hoping we can make this more of a permanent thing just like the men.”
The ladies will play Tuesday through Friday with game times being 6 and 7:15 p.m.
Sponsors for the new league this year are Ortega’s Sportworld, David and Sons Towing, AZ. Home and Land Realty, Oyuki’s Beauty Salon, Ruben Teran, Maddux and Sons and Chiricahua Community Health Center.
