The schedule to receive the vaccines is Sept. 1, 2008, for a child entering sixth grade; Sept. 1, 2009, for a child entering sixth and seventh grades; Sept. 1, 2010 for a child entering sixth through eighth grades; Sept. 1, 2011 for a child entering sixth through ninth grades; Sept. 1, 2012 for a child entering sixth through tenth grades; Sept. 1, 2013 for a child entering sixth through eleventh grades and Sept. 1, 2014 for a child entering sixth through twelfth grades.
As of Sept. 1, students 11 years and older who are beginning the tetanus/diphtheria series must receive one dose of Tdap as a part of three-dose series. Students starting the series should receive Tdap as their first dose, followed by tetanus/diphtheria for the second and third doses.
In addition, students 11 and older who have had 10 years pass since their last tetanus/diphtheria vaccine dose must receive the Tdap as their first tetanus/diphtheria booster by Sept. 1.
After a child has received their Tdap booster, a Td booster is required 10 years after the child’s Tdap booster. Only one dose of Tdap is recommended for children and should last a lifetime.
