The Douglas Sol basketball club was back in action this past weekend competing in a U-15 basketball tournament in Agua Prieta.

Douglas ended up winning the tournament beating Agua Prieta in the finals.

Douglas finished the tournament with a 3-0 record, Agua Prieta was second at 2-1, Cananea was 1-2 and Naco 0-3.

The Lady Sol began the tournament beating Cananea 32-23 in the opening round. Sol Coaches said Cananea was a very tall team with a very talented point guard. Douglas’ press proved to be the difference this game as the Sol came away with an opening round win.

Nythzia Machado led Douglas in scoring with 14 points, Victoria Mariscal followed with 12 and Aleen Nunez chipped in three.

Vicky Ramos led the team in rebounds.

In the second game Douglas thumped Naco 57-7.

Sol coaches said Naco was not as bad as the score may indicate but that Douglas’ defense was tenacious limiting Naco to one shot every time they put the ball up.

Machado led Douglas in scoring this game with 16 points, Ramos followed with 14, Mariscal nine, Kayla Vasquez and Linda Lopez each had six and Martha Lamadrid and Yesi Mireles each contributed four.

The third game pitted Douglas against Agua Prieta. Both teams were 2-0 going into the game. Tied 15-15 at the half the Lady Sol used a 32-19 second half run to take a 47-34 win.

Sol coaches said Agua Prieta is a much improved ball club from the last time these same two teams met but that Douglas’ quickness was the factor in the end.

Ramos led Douglas in scoring with 14 points. Machado followed with 12, Vasquez had eight, Nunez six and Lopez four.

Sol coaches said Lamadrid and Mireles played good tough defense for Douglas.

The coaches said they were very pleased with how their team played in the tournament.

This is the ninth tournament this particular Sol team has taken part in and these girls continue to play hard and aggressive every tournament they’re in.

Sol coaches would like to thank their sponsors Dr. Gloria Mariscal, Mi Ranchito, RG&S Homes, Adair, Brown and Page, Sportsworld, Alta Apartments and all the parents.

This is the seventh year of existence for the Lady Sol and new players in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade divisions are needed.

Anyone interested in joining the Sol may contact Tony Vasquez at 364-5721 or 364-5120 or Tony Vasquez at 236-9131.
