Although Douglas police have witnessed a rise in residential crimes lately, the hardest areas hit, though, stretched from 8th Street to 14th Street, police authorities said.

In August alone there have been 39 reported cases of theft, burglary and criminal damage, said Marcus Gonzalez, the spokesman for the Douglas Police Department.

The thieves typically gain entry through the backyard. They cut locks to storage or tool sheds and steal power tools or electronic equipment, Gonzalez said.

“If the items they want aren’t immediately visible, they quickly move on to the next home,” Gonzalez said.

The thieves keep the broken or cut locks in order to leave little evidence.  In order to cut off the locks, the thieves need bolt cutters, which are somewhat large in size and very difficult to conceal.  Therefore, the thieves would be easily recognizable if seen, he said.

“The Douglas Police Department feels that an informed community is a safer community and is therefore requesting the assistance of the community in reporting suspicious individuals in their neighborhoods,” Gonzalez said.

Police have increased patrols in the areas hit hardest by the thieves, but it is impossible to be in all places at once.  With the assistance of the community, there will be more eyes looking out for these burglars, thus increasing the chances of apprehending the suspects, Gonzalez said.

“Help us to apprehend the thieves and to reduce your chances of becoming their next victim,” he said.

" Increased patrol? With what Officers? Short staffed, over-worked, under-paid Douglas Police Officers or spoiled, pampered lazy bully Giitem "officers"? Either way it can't be quality patrol work being done. "
