Three first half goals lifted the Cochise College Lady Apache soccer team to a 3-0 win over Glendale Community College Friday.

The game was the first for the Lady Apaches on their new soccer field which was upgraded to regulation size during the summer.

Freshman Sandy Thur scored Cochise’s first goal seven minutes into the match off a free kick.

Thirty-two minutes later Kelsey Centner scored off a Valerie Perez assist.

Just before the half Keirsten Cheatham scored off a Celeste Peralta feed giving Cochise its 3-0 lead.

The two teams bogged down into somewhat of a defensive battle the second half neither team scoring a goal.

Cochise out shot Glendale 14-0. Lady Apache goalie Rachael Given had a lonely day in the net recording zero saves.

After the match Cochise College soccer coach it’s a win and he’ll take it but this was a very difficult team to play.

“(Glendale) had no substitutes; they were clearly walking through this thing,” he said. “It looked like the game was being played under water at times.”

Psychologically its tough to adjust to a team like that, the coach said.

Bermingham’s team had a big battle with Mesa Monday finishing in a 1-1 tie. The coach said this match was just the complete opposite of what was played on Monday.

“We’re young so we’re not going to be able to pummel teams like this,” he said. “We really didn’t make the adjustments that we needed to but obviously we were rock solid in the back.”

The coach said his sophomores all showed their leadership skills Friday.

“They know how to play a little more intensely that some of these freshmen,” he said.

Playing on the “new” field was great, the coach said.

“The field is in great shape,” he said. “If this isn’t the best field in the league it has to be in the top two or three.”

Cochise, 1-0-1, will be back at home next Friday hosting Gateway in an ACCAC game. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
