Sonic restaurant is gone from Douglas, but Burger Shack is there to meet the needs of Douglas taste buds.

Dennis Byrd, Cindy Rodriguez and Ricky Byrd of the Burger Shack.

Owned by Dennis Byrd of Byrd’s Construction, the restaurant opened last weekend and offers much of the same fare offered by Sonic prior to its closing.

But don’t think this was a matter of just walking in and putting an open sign on the door.

“We put in all new equipment, including a new intercom system, and a state-of-the-art ordering system inside with touch screens,” he said.

“We wanted to maintain a similar menu. It was familiar to Douglas and it was something they came to expect.  All of our food is made to oder and all of our hamburgers are 100 percent beef.”

The menu, or course, includes hamburgers, sandwiches, corn dogs, and a kids menu, in addition to favorites like  French Fries, Chills Cheese fries, popcorn chicken and tater tots. They also provide a wide variety of drinks and ice cream specialties.

The other difference is the hours. The Burger Shack opens later, but is also open longer. It opens at 11 a.m. seven  days a week, but closes at 10 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, and at midnight Friday and Saturday.

“We are going to try this menu for six to 12 months, and then look at changes,” said Ricky Byrd. “We will also have specials ever one to two weeks in addition to trying new things to add to the menu.

“You can also call in your order at 364-4560 for pickup,” said Manager Cindy Rodriguez.

Burger Shack also takes Visa, Mastercard and American Express, credit card or debit, along with American or Mexican cash.

" Congratulations to Dennis, Cindy, and Ricky on their business venture! My family and I would like to wish you the best of luck and we hope that the Burger Shack surpasses Sonic's stay here in Douglas. We are fortunate to have a burger place on this side of town. So come on, Douglas let's give the Burger Shack our business. "
