BISBEE — Incumbents garnered the big numbers in the Cochise County Board of Supervisors primary election and face strong challenges in November.

In the District 1 race, incumbent Republican Pat Call will face off against Democrat Chris Campas in the general election. Call, who ran unopposed on the Republican ticket, unofficially received 3,018 votes.

Campas defeated his Democratic opponent Henry Copeland.Campas had 60.80 percent, or 1,053 votes, to Copeland’s 38.68 percent, or 670 votes.

“I think it’s exciting,” Campas said. “We can begin to open communications and learn what the community wants. It will be beneficial to Sierra Vista to have a choice between me and Pat Call.”

Call looks forward to the challenge Campas offers.

“I’m excited. I take all contenders seriously,” Call said. “I have a great deal of admiration for Chris, but this job needs experience. It’s an important job and it requires 110 percent of your time. I’m going to keep giving 110 percent as I have in the past ... No one is sitting back and resting on their laurels. If people are looking for change they don’t have to look far. We’re pushing the envelope and I hope to continue our progress.”

District 2, the up-for-grabs seat being vacated by Paul Newman, had five Democratic candidates running and former supervisor Ann English won with 54.69 percent of the votes as 1,523 residents voted in her favor.

She was sitting at home polishing a pair of silver earrings when she got word of her win. “That’s good. I feel like I needed to do this for our community. I wanted our voices to be heard. And I feel this is the right time to do at this point in my life. I’m excited that the Democrats decided to back me.”

She will be facing Republican Harvey Allen in November. Allen ran unopposed on the Republican ticket and received 1,208 votes.

In District 3, incumbent Republican Richard Searle defeated challengers Pamela Hardin and Bob Everett. Searle received 1,031 votes to Everett’s 456 and Harlan’s 673. He will face Democratic challenger Sharon Thomas in the general election, who received 1,144 votes.

Searle said, “I faced two serious challengers. I am relieved and pleased to get the backing of my party.”
