McGinnis said the tax collected paid for transportation to rural schools that are not within a school district. Parents who transport their children to rural schools are able to recoup gas expenses.
County School Superintendent Trudy Berry said in a phone interview that there are many properties across the county that aren’t in a school district, and it is those property owners who pay the County Education District tax as mandated by the state. Parents can turn in vouchers to the school their children attend. Reimbursement is made through Berry’s office.
