DYFL Chargers begin season with 34-8 win

The Douglas Chargers midget division football team kicked off its season Saturday with a convincing 34-8 win over Huachuca City.

The flag team plays at 11:30 p.m. followed by the mighty mites at 1 p.m. and the peewee Chargers at 3 p.m. The midget Chargers, who beat Huachuca City last week 34-8 in the season opener, will play at 5 p.m.

Grant Watkins had four touchdowns for Douglas that game including a 70-yard kickoff return for a TD at the start of the game giving the Chargers a quick 6-0 lead.

Watkins later scored on an 18-yard run and David Ahumada’s conversion gave Douglas a 14-0 lead.

Watkins scored again in the second half but the missed extra point left the Chargers with a 20-0 half time lead.

Watkins then scored again in the third on a four-yard run.

Huachuca City responded with its lone score of the night and the successful conversion cutting Douglas’ lead to 26-8.

Hector Vasquez then scored for Douglas in the fourth quarter on a seven yard run. He also ran in the conversion giving the Chargers a 34-8 lead.

According to team statisticians Douglas finished with 98-yards in total offense – all of which came on the ground. Watkins finished with 44-yards rushing and 118 yards in kickoff returns, Ozzy Moreno had 49 yards rushing and Mark Romero had 38 yards in punt returns.

Defensively Ryan Gonzalez, Moreno and Romero each had four tackles. Jordan Nelson had two and a half quarterback sacks. Larry Moss, Jesus Toscano and Romero each had fumble recoveries.

The Chargers begin a three game home stand starting this Saturday when they host the Sierra Vista Cardinals. The flag division will play at 11:30 a.m.; the mighty mites will follow at 1 p.m. followed by the peewee division at 3 p.m. and the midgets at 5 p.m.

All games will take place at Armando DeLucas Stadium.
