SIERRA VISTA – Both the Douglas Bulldog and Lady Bulldog cross country teams came in third place in a triangular meet with Buena and Sabino Wednesday.

Sabino won both races scoring 18 points in the boys meet and 29 in the girls. Buena’s girls followed with 30 points while the Buena boys had 44. The Bulldogs finished with 67 points while the Lady Bulldogs had 70.

In the boys meet Douglas’ cross country coach David Bond said his team ran against a tough Sabino team that finished first, second, third, fourth and eighth.

Alex Evans was the overall winner finishing with a time of 16-minutes, 22-seconds.

Alek Irey led the Bulldogs with a seventh place finish overall and a time of 17:18. Luis Martinez followed in 11th place and a time of 18:13; Alex Ortega was 14th with an 18:35; Kenny Cardenas 17th with a 19:23 and newcomers Fernando Dominguez and Robert Coronado placed 20th and 24th respectively posting times of 19:41 and 20:08.

Other Douglas runners who ran Wednesday were: Alan Gomez, 25th, 20:26; Marty Hill, 36th, 23:19; Thomas Fredrickson, 43rd, 28:54 and Hector Rosales 44th, 29:26.

Bond said having Dominguez and Coronado do so well after just one day of practice was a “pleasant surprise”

“They showed some real determination,” the coach said of his new runners. “All of the Bulldogs improved their times on a 3.0 mile course compared to one week ago.”

In the girls race Buena’s Jodine Stemmer was the overall winner finishing with a time of 18:59.

Kristi Cormier led Douglas with an eighth place finish and a time of 20:51. Melia Skinner followed in 11th with a 21:56; Leilani Skinner was 15th with a 22:25 and Kim Cormier 16th with a 22:46. Natalie Ramirez followed in 25th place and a time of 25:22; Aileen Moreno was 26th with a 25:42; Flor Cuevas 27th with a 25:45 and Micah Montes was 34th posting a time of 27:34.

Forty-one runners ran in the 3.0 mile race.

Coach Bond said the course was flat with about a quarter mile of soft sand.

“On a cool, rainy day all the Douglas girls ran one or two minutes faster compared to a week ago,” he said. “In her first ace Flor Cuevas, a freshman, was seventh on the Douglas squad.”

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will run at the Buena Invitational Saturday which will feature 8-12 teams.

Douglas has just two home meets this season. The home opener will take place next Wednesday when the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs host Desert View and Palo Verde.

Race times for the Douglas meet will be 4, 4:30 and 5 p.m.
