American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. Prior to 2005, only communities with a population of 250,000 or more were included. In 2005, this was changed to include populations of 65,000 or more.

Youth Orchestra to entertain at Sierra Vista Fiddle Contest on September 20
The energetic young members of the Cochise County Youth Orchestra will take the stage at Veteran’s Memorial Park Bandshell in Sierra Vista to entertain the crowd with a lunchtime performance of fiddle tunes during the 4th Annual Sierra Vista Fiddle Contest.

16th annual Bisbee Fiber Arts Festival on October 11
In celebration of National Spinning and Weaving Week, the Bisbee Fiber Arts Guild is presenting the 16th Annual Bisbee Fiber Arts Festival on Saturday October 11th from 8am to 1pm in Vista Park, along with the Bisbee Farmer’s Market.  Vista Park is located in the Warren District, across from the ballpark.  The festival is an educational event and is open to the public, free of charge.

Cochise College begins construction in Douglas
Cochise College kicked off major renovations at its Douglas campus nearly 45 years after construction began on the original campus in 1963.

Weaver from Oaxaca to demonstrate at Douglas, Sierra Vista campuses
Cochise College presents two public demonstrations in September and October by Alex Martinez, a Zapotec weaver from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca. Martinez and his family of master weavers follow a tradition of more than 100 years weaving rugs. The tradition began with Eliseo Martinez and his 10 sons, and the family’s weaving skills have been shared among the generations. The Martinez family employs ancient methods using natural and vegetable dyes to infuse a wide array of colors and tones into rugs and tapestries.
