Chase ends in arrest, seizure of pot load

More than 400 pounds of marijuana was recovered after a high-speed chase on Highway 191 Thursday evening.

The event began just after 6 p.m. when a license plate check by an officer with the state’s Gang & Immigration Intelligence Team Enforcement Mission, or GIITEM, on a 1995 GMC Yukon returned as stolen, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

When the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver turned the vehicle around and began heading southbound toward Douglas, eventually reaching speeds of more than 100 mph, the DPS said.

A marked Highway Patrol car then took over the chase. The Yukon’s tires were spiked by Douglas police at milepost 8. The driver eventually ran on foot after pulling over two miles later, and the man was caught.

Martin Taredesm, 18, of Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, was arrested for possession and transportation with the intent to sell marijuana, the release said.

A total of 434 pounds was found inside the vehicle, which itself turned out not be stolen. The license plate on the Yukon was taken from another vehicle that had been reported stolen.

The DPS said Taredes had the proper paperwork to be in the country legally.
