In celebration of National Spinning and Weaving Week, the Bisbee Fiber Arts Guild is presenting the 16th Annual Bisbee Fiber Arts Festival on Saturday October 11th from 8am to 1pm in Vista Park, along with the Bisbee Farmer’s Market.  Vista Park is located in the Warren District, across from the ballpark.  The festival is an educational event and is open to the public, free of charge.

This year the Fiber Festival will be featuring Alexandro Martinez as guest artist.  Alex is a Zapotec weaver from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, in southwestern Mexico.  Teotitlan del Valle was the first village founded by the Zapotec, who have been weaving since long before the Spaniards came to Mexico.  The Art Department of Sierra Vista Cochise College has been instrumental in finding the Martinez family, who themselves have a long tradition of rug weaving, and in bringing Alex and his sister Nancy to Arizona. During the Fiber Festival, they will be demonstrating and selling their rugs.  Alex will also be teaching a Tapestry Rug Weaving Workshop on October 3-4-5 and a Spinning and Natural Dyeing Workshop on October 12 & 13th.  For photos and details on the workshops, please go to www.bisbeefiberarts.com and click on CLASSES.

Fiber animals are always an important part of the Fiber Festival.  This year April Meek of Sky Island Alpaca Ranch will be bringing a loveable alpaca for everyone to see and pet, and the 47 Ranch will have a baby lamb for the kids enjoy.  The public will get to see how these fleeces are made into yarn on spinning wheels and spindles and then turned into clothing and other finished products.  Weavers, spinners, dyers, knitters and other fiber craft artists will be at the market demonstrating their craft. Deb Taylor of Gourd Dog Studio will have a roving fashion show of her hand-dyed clothes.  The Creative Anachronisms Society will be in costume and demonstrating their ancient fiber art crafts.

There will be a nice array of vendors with handmade items, tools for the fiber artists, as well as fiber and yarns.

Following the Festival, Jill Holbrook from Tucson will be giving a Spinning for Color Workshop in the Fiber Studio at 26 Howell Ave in the Bisbee Community Y.  For information contact Andy at andread765@gmail.com
