Weaver from Oaxaca to demonstrate at Douglas, Sierra Vista campuses

Published/Last Modified on Friday, September 19, 2008 2:39 PM MDT

Cochise College presents two public demonstrations in September and October by Alex Martinez, a Zapotec weaver from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca. Martinez and his family of master weavers follow a tradition of more than 100 years weaving rugs. The tradition began with Eliseo Martinez and his 10 sons, and the family’s weaving skills have been shared among the generations. The Martinez family employs ancient methods using natural and vegetable dyes to infuse a wide array of colors and tones into rugs and tapestries.

Martinez will demonstrate his technique and discuss the history of weaving during two presentations that are free and open to the public. The Sierra Vista Campus presentation will be from 12:10 to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 in the Library Commons. The Douglas Campus presentation will be from 12:10 to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the Student Union.

Anyone needing an accommodation in order to attend should contact the Disability Services Office, (520) 515-5337 or (520) 417-4023, at least 72 hours in advance. For more information, contact the Cochise College Center for Lifelong Learning at (520) 417-4772 or (520) 515-5492.
