With his hands and feet shackled in chains and looking down shyly at his inmate shoes, a 12-year-old Pirtleville boy appeared in court Friday, where his lawyer presented an update on the boy’s case.

On Aug. 1 the boy shot and killed his mother, Sara Madrid, 34, with a small caliber handgun.

Sanford Edelman, the boy’s lawyer, did not reveal the updates in court.

Cochise County Superior Court Judge James Conolgue set a telephonic status hearing for Oct. 10, 2008 at 8:30 a.m. in Division 5.

In early August the boy shot his mother five times at their home at 2500 Oak Avenue. He then turned and fired three more rounds at an above ground swimming pool.

Madrid was transported to Southeast Arizona Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead,

The boy was transported to juvenile detention in Sierra Vista.

Shortly after the Cochise County Attorney’s Office filed a petition to prosecute the boy as an adult.
