New course about holocaust to be offered in Douglas

Cochise College will offer the new course “Holocaust: Past and Present” at the Douglas Campus during the eight-week session that begins in October.

The course has been added due to a growing interest in the topic resulting from annual student trips to the El Paso Holocaust Museum and other related activities. It will be taught by Dave Pettes, who has led the El Paso trips and taught at the college for many years, and Daniel O’Meara, who has traveled to numerous holocaust sites in Europe and spent time in Israel. Course content includes studies about why holocausts happen, what events lead to genocide, and the scapegoat premise, as well as a visit to the El Paso Holocaust Museum and an opportunity to meet survivors.

The course meets from 9 to 10:50 a.m. Fridays Oct. 24, Oct. 31, Nov. 14 and Dec. 5. The visit to El Paso takes place on Friday, Nov. 21. Students may enroll for one credit or participate in the non-credit option through the Cochise College Center for Lifelong Learning. The deadline to register is Friday, Oct. 17.
