DUSD to discuss Cardona’s employment on Tuesday

Having a 30-day paid vacation sounds pretty good. Time to catch up on reading, chores, all of those little things.

But it hasn't been all that pleasant for Cynthia Cardona, a district Educational Technology Director.

She has been sitting at home waiting for Tuesday, October 7, when Cardona will be the subject of discussion by the Douglas Unified School District Governing Board about her continued employment.

In a draft list of charges presented to Cardona by messenger, she is accused of insubordination, not following proper bid procedures, and violated staff ethics.

According to the documentation, Cardona "complained" that she could not work with the other coordinator, who was supposed to train her.

Cardona said the relationship between her and the trainer was very oppressive and restrictive from the beginning.

Eventually the two were separated and Cardona was assigned to Douglas High School, Clawson and Stevenson.

According to the charges from the school, "On August 13, Ms. Cardona sent an email to the principals at her assigned school directing them to "quickly" provide her with a long list of items. Due in part to the incredible burden these requests placed on the principals, on the same day Ms. Cardona's supervisor (Leanne Marston, Director, Office of School Improvement, verbally directed Ms. Cardona to henceforth refrain from giving directions to administrative staff without prior approval; Ms. Cardona was further specifically instructed to copy her supervisor on each and every email communication she sent to administrators (this directive is the same requirement made of all OSI employees). At that meeting, Ms. Cardona was also verbally directed by her supervisor to henceforth refrain from airing criticism of other employees or of the District in any manner not designed to improve the District, in compliance with Governing Board Policy GBEA, regarding staff ethics."

There is no supporting email or other documentation Cardona said she received concerning the conversation with Marston.

Cardona said in the letter she wasn't providing a "directive" to the principals. "I was simply asking questions about their situation so I could do my job better."

In the letter, Cardona introduces herself, and in an introductory paragraph says "In order for me to make sure that we are up to speed with providing teachers the required tools to complete the technology part of teaching and assessing students, I need some information from the three of you; your quick response will be greatly appreciated."

Cardona asked for a list of teachers and students in the schools; what technology is available; computer lab information and if there were media services available in the DHS library. Also, what programs do the students and teacher need to access now."

"I don't understand how this is a directive, I just asked a few questions," Cardona said.

In an email back from Marston, Cardona is told, not directed or scolded, "This is a whole lot to ask of the principals - you can get 90 percent of this information from Javier. I am worried that you won't get the information you need if you wait for the overworked principals to answer you.

"Again, thank you for taking the initiative and getting started."

The charges also refer to derogatory comments made by Cardona in an email. In a response to Judy Riddle on August 13, when says, "Hang in there Judy, we will make it through the machine."

"It was not intended as a derogatory statement. When I got here, CTE Director Rob Doctor said 'Welcome to the machine.' "

Most of the backup documentation refers to Cardona failing to CC Marston on her email correspondence.

Cardona did admit that she did mistakenly ask teachers about the need for L-shaped computer desks and apologized if it appeared she was bypassing the bidding procedures.

"I just wanted to do my job. What I saw with regards to technical computer education training was a joke," she said.

Since her suspension, Cardona has since filed a complaint with the Cochise County Department of Environment Health Systems about the filthy keyboards in the schools.

She had prepared a PowerPoint presentation on how to clean classroom computer using alcohol and canned air. She was later chastised, because alcohol of any kind is not allowed in the classrooms.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Central Administration Office on 12th Street.

" Thank you for those of you who are supporting me in this matter. I have been preparing my appeal to the Board as they did decide to dismiss me. I agree with many of your points and yes, Leanne tries to be mother hen, if you know the name of the individual she did this to at Huber, please share and are they the one that went to work at Ray Borane later because the board found them not guilty? " It makes me very sad that we live in a town that at times can be so wonderful, like when we are trying to collect money for a sick person or helping out a needy family, but then there are some people who thrive on negitive situations that can hurt peole. It is the peole who go stright to the comment section and read all of the negitivity, without knowing all of the facts. Lets all be the community we know we can be! We are better then this- "

" I can appreciate that people are interested in the individuals who educate their children, and there seems to be genuine concern over the negativity that seems to be coming from DUSD. This district has many teachers, principals and directors who do a great job! Ms. Marston has the best interest of this district at heart, and the hen comment is just ignorant. Administrators like Mrs. Lopez, Ms. Leon, Dr. Simmons, and Mr. Schuerman help create positive and caring environments where your children can succeed and learn! Schools are only as good as their leadership! Districts are too...HMMMM??? "

" Teacher from back east is right on the dot! The administration loves power and control. Especially because it's easy to get "comfortable" in a small district. As a former resident and student of Douglas, I know for a fact, and even personally the people in the administration are people who are not up to date in this modern generation. Residents should call for an investigation and review of all administration to see if they even qualify for their position. It really looks like Douglas needs new, modern-educated, and balanced professionals. I feel for the students and teachers. stay strong! "

" seems to me that this school system in Douglas has all kinds of problems we all are over welmed at work sometimes but the principals should learn and practice team work and so should everyone else in our schools so what she said a few comments everyone needs to get things off their chest and it seems to me the e-mails were polite and proper i think this is all done because she doesnt run with the rest of the pack its all about who u know in Douglas isnt it ? Clean up our schools with respectful employees "

" My heart goes out to Ms. Cardona. I don't teach in AZ as I have found school adim here to be obsessed with power and control. It is their way or the highway! From what I read in the paper it didn't take much for Ms. Cardona to be threatened with the loss of her job. Question school adim? Taking the initiative to do something? Cynthia, what were you thinking? Just do as you're told.......period! Good luck to you. "

" It sounds to me from talking with many people that work for the district that people doing their jobs isn't respected. It kind of sucks when people get into trouble and then are up to be dismissed for doing their jobs. Many people don't have the initiative and don't do their jobs. When someone comes and wants to do their job, I say let them. Principals have a lot to do, but they have assistants too, don't they. Who is in charge of the schools? This sounds fishy to me. "
