In other action on October 7, the Douglas Unified School District Governing Board:


• Recognized the DUSD #27 business office staff for Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Report for FY ending 6/30/07

Approved the following donations: Alignment rack with a value of $13,800.00 from Chapman Volkswagen of Tucson for use in the CTE Auto Shop class; Library books with a value of $500.00 from Mr. Ray Levra for the Bette Levra library at Douglas High School; School supplies with an approximate value of $1,020.66 each for Sarah Marley and Faras schools from the AZ Department of Corrections — Douglas complex ‘Tack to School” drive, and donation in the amount of $685.75 from Cochise College towards the purchase of uniforms

• Approved the fundraising activities for Peer Mediators club newly formed at Huber Middle School.

• Approved the following Human Resource items (certified): Hire — 4th grade teacher (emergency certified — Clawson) — Chris Moore-Backman at a total salary of $24,877.55 (amounts prorated for 138 contract days).

• Approved certified staff teaching extra class at 1/6 base salary or club sponsors for 2008/2009 school year:Emilio Gonzales (Band, DHS) $5,017; John Mariscal (Math,  RBMS) $7,383; John Manjarres (Math, HMS) $6,961; Richard Ross (Student Council,  HMS) $552; Virginia West (Drama,  DHS) $552; Olivia Garino (Folklorico,  DHS) $3,079

• Approved compensation for certified staff for extended day tutoring at a rate of $25.00/day; and compensation for certified staff for Saturday school sessions at district schools at a rate of $150.00/day.

• Approved addendum in the amount of $1,718.75 for Edmund Garcia for 4-hour block of ELD instruction at Sarah Marley Elementary.

• Hired — RBMS boys basketball coach, Brad Linsday, at a salary of $1,104; RBMS boys assistant basketball coaches, Hector Gomez (salary of $1,214) and Brycen Wesen (salary of $883); RBMS girls soccer coach, Marcos Romero, at a salary of $883;  HMS girls soccer coach, Gabriel Ortega, at a salary of $1,104; HMS assistant girls soccer coach, Nick Greer, at a salary of $883; HMS assistant boys basketball coach, Daniel Ellsworth, at a salary of $883; and DHS assistant girls basketball coaches, Lorena Tapia (salary of $1,656) and Melissa Rodriguez (salary of $1,843)

Approved hiring substitute teachers William Kimble (certified-retired),  $80/day; Cayle Gorman (emergency) Angel Ortega (emergency) and Michael Moreno (emergency),  $50/day.

• Approved to pay $1,500 for Mary Morris for sponsoring the Future Educators of America (FEA); Compensation in the amount of $500 for Richard Paun for Art Liaison district-wide.

• Approved payment for extra duties as Career & Technical Ed internship student supervisors for Luis Luna ($4,640) and Albert Young ($4,400); compensation (amount not to exceed $10,000) for homebound services provided by Sally Hamilton, certified teacher; $2,000 for Richard Acosta for duties as GED facilitator; and $13,325 for Janice Fritsche for occupational therapy services district-wide.

Approved correction to addendum for Chaelyn Fredrickson for D-PASS Language Arts instructor — amount approved by Board on 9/2/08 was $5,500 per semester and should have been $6,000 per semester.

• Approved Pima Community College student, Valeria Gonzales, to complete student teaching at DHS for 2008/2009 fall semester.

• Approved new job description — Career & Technical Education School & Community Outreach Coordinator.

• Approved  one step pay increase for coaching staff for 2008-2009 school year.

• Approved addendum in the amount of $5,067 for Clint Hill for teaching a CTE class (Fire Science) during his planning period.

• Approved the following Human Resource items (classified): Resignations -Noemi Escalante (spec ed aide, HMS) ; Venus Mendoza (spec ed aide,  Joe Carlson); Marisela Flores (health aide, DHS) ; Mario Chavez (bus driver); Imelda De Ia Ossa (spec ed aide, Sarah Marley); and hired Jesus Wilkinson, bus driver — at an hourly rate of $10.05; Jeremiah Torres, delivery driver/custodian (food service) — at an hourly rate of $8.54; Wendy Linsday, administrative assistant (Spec Services), at an hourly rate of

$10.74; Cecilia Yanez, secretary U (receptionist, central office), at an hourly rate of $8.87; CTE student interns — Jessica Ackley, lsaias Romo, Clint Aaron Hill, Eilee Molina, Johanna Urquijo — at an hourly rate of $6.90 each (not to exceed $2,800 per student); and Transfered Luz Romero from speech technician to secretary II in the special services department — no change in hourly rate but will be working 40 hrs/week, 11 months.

• Approved out of state travel for district staff - Rob Doctor, Lourdes Mora, Gilbert Rojas, and Maria Figueroa; students — Chantal Jimenez, Hector Rosales, Miriam Herrera, Jennifer Trevino, Armando Corrales and Chrystal Maldonado, Elizabeth Sanchez, Jose Teran, Jose Tostado and Esteffany Peralta to attend the DECA New York Experience in New York, NY on December 2-7, 2008; out of state travel for Career and Technical Education Teacher Ms. Brita Groves and DHS FFA students to attend the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Convention October 21 — 26 in Indianapolis, Indiana; out of state travel for DHS Folklorico club to travel to southern California on October 13-17, 2008 to visit Disneyland and various other places of interest; out of state travel for the Douglas High School band, drum line, and folklorico group to travel to Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico to perform at a fundraising event for the Mexican consulate on October 24, 2008.

• Approved Cochise College Education 201 students for completion of classroom observations during 2008/2009 fall semester.

• Approved the following volunteers for the 2008/2009 school year: Larry Corrales (Joe Carlson), Alvina Hoyack (Stevenson), Jesus Armenta (ELC), Melissa Ramirez (Stevenson), Mary Siddons (Joe Carlson), Alexa Peña (DHS — student), Maria Fullen (Stevenson(, Karen Coronado (DHS — student), Dawn Partain (Stevenson), Briana Owen (S Marley — student), Mariah Irons (Stevenson), Gemma German (RBMS), and Yolanda Ballesteros (Joe Carlson).

• Approved pursuing E-rate funding for FY2009-2010 (Year    12) and submission of Forms 470.

• Approved  pay    increase for maintenance staff of $1 per hour. The increase ismade possible due to the quality of the staff and reduction of the workforce from 20 to 17.

• Approvedsole source procurement for software upgrade for existing AutoCad program.

• Approved purchasing agreement with The Cooperative Purchasing Network (TCPN) through Mary C. O’Brien Accommodation School.

• Approved agreement with Sure-prep Learning, Stillwell Learning and A Road2 Learning, for the provision of supplemental educational services at Ray Borane MS and Huber MS.

• Approved the Governing Board’s official  endorsement of the nomination of Howard Henderson for the AZ School Boards Association media award.

• Approved the first readings of the following policy revisions/new policies: Policy BEDB “Agenda” — new policy; Policy CM “School District Annual Report” — revisions; Policy DIC “Financial Reports and Statements” — revisions; Policy DJE “Bidding/Purchasing Procedures” — revisions; Policy DJG “Vendor/Contractor Relations” — new; Policy GBJ “Personnel Records and Files” — revisions; Policy exhibit GCBA-EC “Professional Staff Salary Schedules — extra duty schedule” -revisions; Policy GCRD “Tutoring for Pay” — revisions;Policy IHAA” English Instruction” — revisions; Policy IJOC “School Volunteers” — revisions; Policy JEB “Entrance Age Requirements” — revisions; Policy JFAA “Admission of Resident Students” — revisions; Policy JRE “Student Biometric Information” — new; and Policy LDA “Student Teaching and Internships” - new.

In the Superintendent’s report, Earl Petit mentioned the DUSD auction scheduled for October 18, and moving the Governing Board self-evaluation to October.

The next regular board meeting Wednesday, November 5, (moved back one day because of elections).

Fall break is October 13-17— All schools, school offices will be closed and Columbus Day, October 13, Central administration and central receiving offices will be closed.
