Social Security checks to increase

WASHINGTON— Social Security checks are going up $63 a month for the typical retiree — the largest increase in more than a quarter century but likely to seem puny to the millions who have been watching in horror as Wall Street lays waste to their retirement nest eggs.

Gas prices across the county are still dropping
SIERRA VISTA — According to the Cochise College Center for Economic Research’s latest biweekly survey of gas prices, conducted during the week of Oct. 6, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Cochise County dropped from $3.58 to $3.40 over the two-week period.

Flipped
A Chevy Lumina minivan ended up on its side when it failed to stop at a stop sign on M Avenue at 10th Street. The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The van got turned over when it was struck by a black Volkswagen Jetta, which was traveling west on 10th Street. Those involved were injured sufficiently that some were transported to the hospital. The intersection was closed for a block in all directions until 4:45 p.m. The accident is still under investigation.

Mexican Consulate asks for donations to help migrants
In an effort to help illegal immigrants that have been returned to the border, the Mexican Consulate in Douglas is asking for donations of food and other goods.

TUCSON — Two Cochise County residents are members of the jury that will hear evidence in Border Patrol Agent Nicholas Corbett’s murder trial in U.S. District Court starting this morning.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was held at gunpoint last weekend by members of the Mexican military who had crossed the border into Arizona, but the soldiers returned to Mexico without incident when backup agents responded to assist.

American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. Prior to 2005, only communities with a population of 250,000 or more were included. In 2005, this was changed to include populations of 65,000 or more.

Ancient food revival
Thirty three people brought mesquite pods to be ground into flour at last Saturday’s 3rd Mesquite Milling and Mesquite Pancake Breakfast at the Bisbee Farmers Market. A threefold increase from last year, these desert harvesters came from all over the county including greater Sierra Vista, Bisbee, Douglas, Tombstone and Benson with one even bringing pods from Tucson. For most of them it was their first time collecting mesquite for milling.

Like "tree-huggers," we fish-huggers are concerned about the environment, specifically the impact of factory trawlers, bottom draggers, the problem of bycatch (e.g., dolphins caught in tuna nets) and industrialized aquaculture. We worry about the byproducts of bad fisheries management or farming, including mercury, antibiotics and colorants in fish. We want to save the fish so we can ... eat them. A little self-interest can, environmentally speaking, be a good thing.
