Human trafficking has long been a problem along the Arizona-Sonora border. As a result, Gov. Janet Napolitano has formed an Anti-Human Trafficking Council that will address the issue.

“Because Arizona is a crossing point for smugglers, it marks the beginning of the trafficking process,” said Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever.

Dever was asked by Napolitano to join the council.

Napolitano issued a letter to Dever that stated, “I am writing to enlist your support in our efforts by joining the first bi-national Anti-Human Trafficking Coordinating Council. Human trafficking is happening within our state and across the Arizona-Sonora border, and a comprehensive and expedient strategy and response is needed.”

Dever said that the first meeting will be on Nov. 12, where the goals and roles of each member of the council will be discussed.

“I am honored by the invitation and gladly accept the opportunity to work with the council and help to resolve the bane of human trafficking in our state,” he said.

" I was a bit surprised at the suggestion that the Governor would select Sheriff Dever to help her address human smuggling. His record in Cochise County wouldn't seem to support that. Now it appears that the position on the council is Ex Officio and that all border county Sheriffs received that letter. This not-so-subtle distortion makes it seem like he was singled out for some privledged position. The Dispatch owes us another look to see if they've been taken in by an election year gimmick. Please follow up on this. "

" This isn't what it seems! The Governor's website shows NO press release about Dever. In fact, the Governor's office hasn't announced the Commission publicly yet. The info was released early by Sheriff Dever because he needed good press to offset Hurricane Fed Investigation hitting his office right now. What's more ALL border sheriffs were invited. So when Bradley wins Nov 4, I bet he's at that first meeting! This "appointment" isn't for Larry Dever. It's for Cochise County. Good try Dever but the facts caught up with you again old man. "

" This governor has got to go.

Larry Dever will not allow his deputies to arrest anyone under the state law for prosecuting people smugglers.

Could not have been a worse pick. "
