In an effort to help illegal immigrants that have been returned to the border, the Mexican Consulate in Douglas is asking for donations of food and other goods.

The Migrathon, as the Consulate has named it, will be picking up donations in Agua Prieta on Oct. 24 and 25 from 9 a.m. to 9p.m. at the Plan De Agua Prieta Park, said Oscar De La Torre Amezcua, the Mexican Consulate in Douglas.

For donors unable to make it to Agua Prieta, the donations can be dropped off at the Mexican Consulate building at 1201 F Avenue.

“We are looking for food, clothing and non-prescription medicine,” Del La Torre Amezcua said.

The reason the donations are needed is because the Douglas/ Naco corridor continues to be the busiest for migrant crossings, he said.

The second phase of the Migrathon will be held in Naco, Sonora, on Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Plaza Municipal Square; the third phase will be held in Cananea, Sonora, on Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 6p.m. at the Plaza Juarez Square, he said.

The Migrathon is part of a Special Program for Protection and Consular Assistance as an initiative of the Mexican Foreign Affairs Secretariat against the tightening of anti-migrant policies in Arizona, he said.

Since January, 97,000 Mexican migrants have been apprehended and returned to Mexico through the Douglas and Naco ports of entry, he said.

He said that almost 40 percent of the apprehensions in the Tucson sector were made by agents in the Douglas, Naco and Willcox stations.

“The needs of repatriated migrants may include treatment to burnt and blistered feet, back and leg surgeries due to injuries from falling off the border fence, and water and food to those who were held for more than 12 hours,” he said.

Migrants are frequently robbed in the desert and are returned to Mexico invulnerable conditions, he said.

The Mexican Consulate in Douglas has invited directors of non-governmental organizations of Agua Prieta, Naco and Canana.

" How about use some of that drug money to help these illegal's when they get caught and are returned home. We gave enough while they were here, illegally, why should we be asked to give more when they get caught. Your country is rich, start helping your own people and quit depending on American's to take care of them. "
