If cancer doesn’t sleep, neither did the 22 teams that participated in the 14th Annual Relay for Life, which honors cancer survivors as well as those that have passed because of this dreaded disease.

Cassandra Mendez, 10, of Bisbee, was one of the youngest survivors of cancer at this weekend’s Relay. Here, with her painted palm, she stamps her palm’s imprint onto a board with similar palm prints and pictures. See more photos on Page B1 of the Douglas Dispatch.

On Oct. 25 and 26 participants along with friends and family walked laps along the edge of the Copper King Baseball stadium at Causey Park.

The atmosphere was fun and light-hearted, but the message was clear: they all gathered there for one day and one night with the single purpose of helping to eliminate cancer, which is considered the number two killer of people worldwide.

Many participants walked their laps for 15, 30 minutes or an hour then stopped for refreshments.

Others were committed to walk their laps for the entire 24 hours, even as the temperature dropped to about 37 degree Fahrenheit.

But early morning Sunday, the participants were weary but their resolve for the cause never failed. By the end of the Relay, all participants gathered and walked the final lap, which signified the commitment and unity of the Douglas community in helping to battle cancer.

The event raised more than $22,000 for cancer.
