Emergency service agencies throughout the area responded to an incident at Douglas High School, and later, Southeast Arizona Medical Center when an unknown powder was received by a worker Monday afternoon.

A threat by a middle school student about an unknown substance in his possession caused the district to close Ray Borane Middle School on Monday.

‘Operation Can’t Hide’ big success in apprehending criminals
Beginning October 22 and lasting through October 24, numerous law enforcement agencies, specifically those in Southern and Northern Arizona, joined forces as part of the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and made 116 felony warrant arrests.  The cumulative effort, however, actually cleared 135 felony warrants and 18 misdemeanor warrants.

American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. Prior to 2005, only communities with a population of 250,000 or more were included. In 2005, this was changed to include populations of 65,000 or more.

Desert Harvest in SE New Mexico
Not only has it been a great year for mesquite pods but there are a lot of pine nuts on the pinon trees in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona.  I just got back from a week around Silver City and Glenwood, New Mexico.  The mesquites there are honey mesquites. We collected some pods for the Cascabel milling on November 15 that have less black mold and beetle damage.

If you are a breakfast skipper and a chronic dieter, a new book may persuade you to change your ways. Pam Anderson, a cookbook author who penned such titles as “The Perfect Recipe” and “Perfect Recipes for Having People Over,” has come through with “The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight and Eating Great” (Houghton Mifflin, 2008). In it, Anderson chronicles her gradual accumulation of excess poundage (all those years of recipe testing!) and her gradual (but delicious) shedding of said pounds. There are inspirational passages, tips, come-hither food photos and, yes, those “perfect” recipes for every meal.

Nothing fishy here-Embrace your inner fish
Like "tree-huggers," we fish-huggers are concerned about the environment, specifically the impact of factory trawlers, bottom draggers, the problem of bycatch (e.g., dolphins caught in tuna nets) and industrialized aquaculture. We worry about the byproducts of bad fisheries management or farming, including mercury, antibiotics and colorants in fish. We want to save the fish so we can ... eat them. A little self-interest can, environmentally speaking, be a good thing.
