Giffords stops in Douglas

Identification necessary at polls
Every voter is required to show proof of identity at the polling place before receiving a ballot. After announcing his/her name and place of residence to the election official, the voter shall present one form of identification that bears the name, address and photograph of the voter or two different forms of identification that bear the name and address of the voter.

No surprises in the Cochise County elections
Incumbents and favorites took the seats in Cochise County during the November 4 election.

American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. Prior to 2005, only communities with a population of 250,000 or more were included. In 2005, this was changed to include populations of 65,000 or more.

Desert Harvest in SE New Mexico
Not only has it been a great year for mesquite pods but there are a lot of pine nuts on the pinon trees in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona.  I just got back from a week around Silver City and Glenwood, New Mexico.  The mesquites there are honey mesquites. We collected some pods for the Cascabel milling on November 15 that have less black mold and beetle damage.

SSG Roberto Flores enlisted in the Army National Guard in May 1974. He attended Basic Training at Fort Knox. KY and then studied to become a tanker operator. He has also been trained as a Cook, Supply, and Motor Transport Operator. He retired in October 2008 with 34 years of proud and faithful service. He participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

Grand Marshal: Sgt Ramon (Mono) Rabago, Jr.
Grand Marshal Sgt. Ramon Rabago, Jr. e served in the U.S. Army from November 16. 1944 and honorably discharged on August 22. 1946. He was assigned with the 100th and 3~ Infantry Division in Europe where he served as motor pool sergeant with the 3~ BN Hg and 7th Infantry Regiment. Each assignment led to increased responsibility in the training and leadership of various soldiers. He received the following awards: European-African-Middle Eastern (ETO) Campaign medal, Army of Occupation medal, Victory medal, and Good Conduct medal. He also received 2 Overseas Service Bars.

Honored Guest Speaker: Petty Officer Richard Keith
Petty Officer Richard Keith enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967. attended basic training in San Diego, CA followed by Naval Corpsman School at Naval Hospital, San Diego. CA. He then attended Field Medical School at Marine Corps base, Camp Pendleton, CA. lie was assigned to the Naval Training Center and Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. He was then attached to the 2’~’ Battalion 1st Marine Regiment 1st Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam. He is authorized eight individual awards and ribbons including unit citations. During his tour in Vietnam, he was cited by the Commanding Officer. Company G, 2’~ Platoon for his professional skill. confidence, and courage while treating injured marines in combat situations. He was honorably discharged in 1971.
