According to the Cochise College Center for Economic Research’s latest biweekly survey of gas prices, conducted during the week of November 3, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Cochise County dropped from $3.14 to $2.77 over the two-week period. According to AAA Arizona, the statewide price decreased from $2.94 to $2.56 per gallon. Nationally, according to the Energy Information Administration, gas prices dropped from $2.91 to $2.40 during the two-week period.

American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. SSG Roberto Flores enlisted in the Army National Guard in May 1974. He attended Basic Training at Fort Knox. KY and then studied to become a tanker operator. He has also been trained as a Cook, Supply, and Motor Transport Operator. He retired in October 2008 with 34 years of proud and faithful service. He participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

Each assignment led to increased responsibility in the training and leadership of various soldiers. He received the following awards: European-African-Middle Eastern (ETO) Campaign medal, Army of Occupation medal, Victory medal, and Good Conduct medal. He also received 2 Overseas Service Bars.

Petty Officer Richard Keith enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967. attended basic training in San Diego, CA followed by Naval Corpsman School at Naval Hospital, San Diego. CA. He then attended Field Medical School at Marine Corps base, Camp Pendleton, CA. lie was assigned to the Naval Training Center and Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. He was then attached to the 2’~’ Battalion 1st Marine Regiment 1st Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam. He is authorized eight individual awards and ribbons including unit citations. During his tour in Vietnam, he was cited by the Commanding Officer. Company G, 2’~ Platoon for his professional skill. confidence, and courage while treating injured marines in combat situations. He was honorably discharged in 1971.

Red Ribbon Week at Faras
Faras Elementary School Students celebrated Red Ribbon Week October 27-31 2008 by participating in educational presentations, poster contests, assemblies and other Drug Awareness Activities. The Border Patrol sent agents with horses, Quad Runners (pictured with Mr. Romero’s 1st/2nd class) and trucks to help explain their jobs. The Pirtleville Fire Department brought their fire truck and dressed in their protective fire gear. The firemen explained how to stay safe and prevent fires. They went on to say what to do in case of a fire. Mr. Duarte, the County Health Educator for Project B.U.T.T. presented a film on anti-smoking and held a discussion with the students. The week ended with their monthly assembly and presented the winners of the Red Ribbon Week Poster with their prizes.

College to host
international film series
The Cochise College Art Department announces its 2008-2009 International Film Series, which features a new movie each month in November, January, February, March and April. Films will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursdays in Room 900 on the Sierra Vista Campus and at 7 p.m. Fridays at the Central School Project, 43 Lowell Ave., Bisbee. Screenings are free and open to the public.
