Honored Guest: SSG Roberto (Chubby) Flores

SSG Roberto Flores enlisted in the Army National Guard in May 1974. He attended Basic Training at Fort Knox. KY and then studied to become a tanker operator. He has also been trained as a Cook, Supply, and Motor Transport Operator. He retired in October 2008 with 34 years of proud and faithful service. He participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.


During a convoy mission in August 2003, he was injured by an Improvised Explosive Device. He received the following medals, ribbons, and awards: Combat Action Badge. 2 Army Commendation Medals and Meritorious Unit Commendation Medals, 2 National Defense Service Medals. Southwest Asia Service Medal. Kuwait and Saudi Liberation Medals. Overseas Training Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Driver’s Badge. 8 Reserve Component Achievement Medals, and the Army Service Ribbon.

He was born in Douglas. AZ August 8, 1956 and graduated Douglas High School in May 1974. He is married to the former Martha Rojas.

Florese served as VFW Post 426 in various capacities including post commander. He is a member of the Bushmaster Club and has served as Vice President. His contribution and assistance has been instrumental to the success of past parades and veterans events. He has been involved in Douglas Little League for over 30 years and was recently honored by throwing the first pitch.

He has worked for the City of Douglas for over 28 years as Supervisor for Special Projects. His experience and guidance make him a familiar presence during routine and emergency city Public Works tasks.
