The Douglas Area Democrats gave a big cheer Tuesday evening when political commentators on television announced that Barack Obama had won the US presidency.

Douglas Area Democrats gather at the Gadsden Hotel Tuesday to watch the presidential elections. A big cheer was in order when television political commentators announced that Barack Obama would be the 44th president of the United States.

“I’m just so glad that he won,” said Ann English, who also won big in the local elections.

English was elected one of three Cochise County Board of Supervisors.

“I just hope people know that I’m approachable and that we can talk about the issues,” she said shortly after Obama had won the presidency. “I will listen and will work hard for the people that I represent.”

English, a Democrat, said that one of the biggest issues that Cochise County faces is the budget.

Pat Fleming, a Democrat, was elected to the State House, District 25, replacing Manny Alvarez, who was elected as State Senator, also District 25. Fleming won with 29 percent of the vote.

“You know, I’m relieved but also thrilled,” she said. “I’m also thrilled that Gabrielle Giffords was re-elected.”

Giffords was re-elected as US Representative of District 8. She ran against Republican Tim Bee of Sierra Vista.

“I’m looking forward to representing all the people who put their trust in me,” Fleming said.

Manny Alvarez was equally relieved to have won his bid for the State Senate. Midway through the elections, he was behind his Republican opponent, Mary Ann Black. Later that evening, Alvarez won with 53 percent of the vote.

In Cochise County the voter turnout was about 59.8 percent.
