Adult Education teacher gets certification

Jim Lively, a teacher in the Cochise College Adult Education program, recently earned the professional designation of Certified Manager in Program Improvement (CMPI).

The CMPI is the first of its kind in the adult education and literacy field and signifies Lively as a member of an elite group of professional managers. Certification requires two years in an intensive training program of the Leadership Excellence Academies (LEA), a joint training initiative of the National Adult Education Professional Development Consortium (NAEPDC) and ProLiteracy. The CMPI designation is awarded to participants who successfully complete the LEA training and who demonstrate a grasp of the material and successful application of what they learned through their activities and learning projects.

Lively’s work focused on improvement of the Adult Education Center serving Douglas. He facilitated a work group of about eight students, staff, and faculty members; completed projects focused on the program’s mission and vision as well as student retention; and devised a plan to improve communication at the center. He also attended webinars, took online courses, and met several times with other peers from Arizona.

“I am happy to have been able to get through the program,” Lively said. “It was pretty intense, but we had a good work group.”

Lively, a resident of Douglas and a lead teacher with the Cochise College Adult Education program, has worked full time at the center since 2001.
