Bruce Whetten / Douglas Dispatch Cochise College’s Jason Holmes chips in two of his 12 points in the second half of the Apaches game with the Tucson Cats. Cochise scored 81 points the first half running away with a 138-92 win.

The Cochise College Apaches kicked off their season this past weekend with a pair of wins.

On Friday the Apaches knocked off the Fort Huachuca Scouts 124-65.

On Saturday Cochise used an 81 point first half out burst to propel them to a 138-92 win over the Tucson Cats.

On Friday Marcus Williams led the Apaches in scoring with 22 points. DeAngelo Jones followed with 20, Mike Mayo had 18, Victor Reid and Jason Holmes each had 16 and Ray Marshall 11.

Cochise 52-27 at the half and 94-50 at the midway point of the second half.

Against the Tucson Cats Saturday Jones and Williams each scored 23 points for the Apaches, Reid had 22 and Mayo 21. Holmes, Eric Neeley and Brandon MacClellen each had 12 points.

The Apaches led Tucson 81-52 at the half and had a 117-76 edge at the midway point of the second half.

Tucson played with six players, five of which saw a majority of the action.

After the game Cochise College coach Jerry Carrillo said he has a good group of guys who are willing to play unselfish basketball.

“These guys understand our system and we’re scoring the ball,” he said.

After two games the coach said his team definitely needs to improve defensively.

“I like our ability to attack the basket and score,” the coach said.

The coach admitted after weeks of practice his team was anxious to get out on the court and play a game that counts.

The Apaches head to Midland, Tex. to play three games in three days. Cochise will face Wayland Baptist on Thursday, Odessa on Friday and Midland on Saturday.

“When we come back we begin league play at Pima so this is a big week for us to get ready for league play,” Carrillo said.
