The Douglas High School cross country team was honored at its post season awards banquet Thursday at the Douglas Aquatic Center.

Alan Gomez, Alex Irey, Kristi Cormier and Micah Montez all landed special recognition awards at the DHS cross country banquet Thursday. Gomez and Montez were named the most improved male and female runners while Cormier and Irey were honored for being the top runners on their respective teams.

Coach Dave Bond praised his runners for their performances this past season which included both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs not only winning the Bisbee Invitational but also finishing 10th at the state meet.

The DHS runners were each presented with packets that included their certificates of participation and varsity letters.

Coach Bond also presented two plaques to his top male and female runner Alex Irey and Kristi Cormier.

The coach also presented two plaques to his most improved runners. Micah Montez was honored for the girls; Alan Gomez for the boys.

Coach Bond reiterated a comment he made earlier that today’s runners are running year round and the times at state keep getting faster each year.

“If we hope to stay competitive we have to do a lot of off season running,” he said.

The individual state champion for the girls came from Douglas’ region.

The state team champion and the runner-up for the boys also came from the same region as the Bulldogs.

“We’re in a very competitive region,” the coach said.

Coach Bond has his off season running program already underway.
