Council OKs fee increase for sewer in new homes
Homebuilders and developers will now have to pay a $3,500 fee for each new _-inch home sewer connection. The ordinance had been a contentious one with both home developers and several Douglas City councilmen. Developers and some councilmen argued that the increase would be too high of a cost for developers to absorb, which could lead to a decline in the building of new homes.

Gas prices continue to drop
Gasoline prices in Douglas have steady dropped during the last several months. In July, gas prices were $3.70 a gallon. Now, four months later, a gallon of gas is $2.33, a $1.37 difference or a 37 percent drop.
Locals arrested for transporting 230 pounds of marijuana

Collision overturns tanker
WHETSTONE — A tanker truck carrying more than 8,000 gallons of fuel overturned Wednesday afternoon after a wreck on Highway 90, causing people in nearby homes and businesses to be evacuated and traffic to be rerouted for hours.
New postmaster in Pirtleville
Brenda Hernandez, left, is sworn in by Nancy S. Hertel, manager of U.S. Post Office operations in Tucson, as the new postmaster in Pirtleville. Hernandez has worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 18 years, including stops in Hereford, Tombstone, Douglas, Bisbee and Naco post offices. In Naco, she was a PMR for 15 years. In May 2005 she was hired at the Douglas Post Office and worked there as a clerk. Hernandez and her husband, Jose, have been married for 22 years and have three children - Jose (Tucson), Joel (Phoenix) and Anthony (Naco) - and two grandchildren, Alesandra and Anthony. Her hobbies are jogging, making flower arrangements, gardening and cooking. More than 25 were at the ceremony.

BISBEE — A sloppy investigation by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was a significant factor that led a majority of the jurors to feel Border Patrol Agent Nicholas Corbett was not guilty of a crime, according to two of the jurors.

American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. Prior to 2005, only communities with a population of 250,000 or more were included. In 2005, this was changed to include populations of 65,000 or more.

Like "tree-huggers," we fish-huggers are concerned about the environment, specifically the impact of factory trawlers, bottom draggers, the problem of bycatch (e.g., dolphins caught in tuna nets) and industrialized aquaculture. We worry about the byproducts of bad fisheries management or farming, including mercury, antibiotics and colorants in fish. We want to save the fish so we can ... eat them. A little self-interest can, environmentally speaking, be a good thing.
