Lumberjacks to rely on backcourt this year

FLAGSTAFF (AP) - The coming basketball season for Northern Arizona University is in experienced hands.

Point guard Josh Wilson is back to run the show as coach Mike Adras' Lumberjacks look for yet another successful season.

Northern Arizona has won 60 games in the past three seasons, including last season's upset of Western Kentucky. The Lumberjacks won the 2006 Big Sky regular season title and shared the crown in 2007.

An NCAA tournament bid has remained elusive, though. Northern Arizona lost in the Big Sky tournament finals each of the last three years.

Wilson already holds the school's single-season and career assists records. The 6-foot-2 senior needs 168 assists to break the conference career assist record of 716 set by Kevin Soares of Nevada in 1992.

Recruited as a shooting guard but shifted to the point two games into his freshman season, Wilson averaged 11.6 points and a league-leading 5.4 assists last season.

Joining Wilson in the initial five-player backcourt rotation are seniors Matt Johnson, Jermaine Bishop and Jermaine Calvin and 6-4 sophomore Cameron Jones.

Johnson and Bishop earned their playing time last season thanks in large part to their effort on defense.

Calvin transferred to Northern Arizona from St. Bonaventure last season, and had to sit out a year due to NCAA rules.

Freshmen guards Shayar Lee, Zack Zaragoza and Gabe Rogers should challenge for playing time by the time league play starts in late December.

NAU's biggest question mark is if its young posts can learn on the job.

Six-foot-seven sophomore Shane Johannsen and 6-8 freshman Josh Lepley will be called upon to help fill the void left with the graduation of last year's All-Big Sky first team post Kyle Landry and fellow big man Ryan McCurdy.

Junior forward Nick Larsen added some muscle to his 6-7 frame in the offseason, and should be more effective in the paint.

Zarko Comagic, a 6-7 senior forward, was inconsistent at times last season, but proved he could change the complexion of a game with his long-range shooting and aggressive moves to the basket.

The tough nonconference schedule also has games at UNLV on Nov. 20, at Arizona on Nov. 30, at Stanford on Dec. 17 and at Wichita State on Dec. 20.
