The Cochise College Lady Apaches chalked up their first league win Saturday beating Scottsdale Community College 73-68 in Cochise Stronghold.

Egle Karolyte led Cochise in scoring with 18 points. Selena Florez followed with 15 and Sylwia Janas followed with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Apaches had a 16 point lead with less than a minute remaining when Scottsdale hit several three’s and then nailed a two pulling within five.

“We’re young and we’re making young mistakes,” Cochise College coach Steve Lane said. “We need to be able o hold onto the ball better.”

Cochise had 34 turnovers Saturday.

Despite playing eight games Lane has had to deal with injuries and illnesses to his team. The coach said at one tournament in Texas he suited up just six players.

Cochise, 3-5 overall, 1-1 in league play, will be back in action Dec. 3 taking on South Mountain in a 5:30 p.m. game in Cochise Stronghold.

CC men win 90-87

The Cochise College Apaches held off a late surge by Scottsdale Saturday to win their ACCAC game 90-87.

Scottsdale led 48-45 at the half but in the second half the Apaches took control and led by 10 with three minutes remaining. Scottsdale hit three straight three-pointers pulling within one.

DeAngelo Jones led Cochise in scoring with 31 points, Marcus Williams followed with 23 points and Mike Mayo closed out with 15.

“We’re young and immature so we don’t really know how to close these kinds of games out yet,” Cochise head coach Jerry Carrillo told the Sierra Vista Herald. “To (Scottsdale’s) credit, their defensive energy got better after they made a couple of threes and some of those threes — they hit some bombs.”

Cochise, 5-2 overall, 2-0 in league play, will host the Sierra Vista Stars Tuesday in a 7:30 p.m. game at Cochise. The Apaches return to league play next Wednesday when they host South Mountain.
