Office manager gets prison, fine in illegal hiring case
TUCSON — The office manager of Sun Drywall and Stucco Inc. in Sierra Vista was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court to 14 months in prison and home detention for employing individuals who are unauthorized to work in the United States.

Parade kicks off Christmas season
Hundreds crowded both sides of G Avenue on Saturday, November 29, waiting for their first glimpse of Santa Claus. The annual Douglas Light Parade kicked off at 7 p.m. Saturday and drew young and old, resident and visitor to downtown Douglas. Counterclockwise, from top, the Grinch drives the old Douglas Fire Engine during the parade; Santa and Mrs Claus wave hello to kids from their sleigh; This beautiful Christmas tree was one of the highlights of the annual parade; and Ronald McDonald made a special visit to the parade this year.

Mexican president vows to clean up corruption
MEXICO CITY (AP) — President Felipe Calderon pledged Sunday to clean up corruption within his administration and vowed that his government would never negotiate with drug lords.
DPS arrests 159 impaired drivers Thanksgiving weekend
During a three day period beginning Friday, November 28 and ending Sunday, November 30, DPS Officers made 159 arrests statewide for driving under the influence. Out of that number 17 drivers were arrested for aggravated DUI and 33 were arrested for extreme DUI. The total number of underage DUI arrests was 14. A total of 18 drivers had prior convictions for DUI when arrested and the average BAC of all of those arrested was .145.

American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. Prior to 2005, only communities with a population of 250,000 or more were included. In 2005, this was changed to include populations of 65,000 or more.

In a past column, I mentioned spending that saves money. It included products and decisions that seem costly upfront but can help you save money in the long run. At the top of the list were steam cleaners, freezers, wood stoves and reusable containers, to name a few.
