Alan Lamadrid’s goal in the 20th minute of the first half was the lone score of the match Friday.
The Bulldogs out shot Pusch Ridge 27-9 but Bulldog soccer coach Ken Cormier said it was hard to score when Pusch Ridge packed the goalies box full of players.
“We played about 80 percent of the match on their side of the field,” the coach said. “It was difficult for us to score with them packing the box the way they did.”
The coach said Pusch Ridge is a decent ball club and it would be fun playing them in a more open type of game.
The coach said he had good defensive play from Jose Cuevas, Estefan Orozco and Jose Larrazola.
On Wednesday the Bulldogs tied Salpointe 1-1 in what coach Cormier describes one of the biggest ties in the history of DHS soccer.
Salpointe is coached by Wolfgang Weber who Cormier describes as a soccer legend in Arizona.
Cormier said in talking with Weber before the game the Salpointe coach admitted he had been following Douglas soccer the last couple of years.
“I’m pretty sure he was surprised we tied his team,” the coach said.
The Bulldogs scored first when Alphonso Romero scored a goal in the 14th minute giving Douglas a 1-0 lead.
Salpointe came out the second half and scored tying the match at 1-1.
Cormier said after that goal it was pretty much an even match with both teams having some nice attacks but nothing to show for it.
“To be able to hang with Salpointe the way we did tonight shows the amount of character this team has especially after last night’s (Tuesday’s) effort vs. Buena,” Cormier said. “As disappointed as I and my coaches were with our effort on Tuesday we were that pleased with our effort tonight.”
The Bulldogs out shot Buena 18-12 and Bulldog goalie Meoqui Skinner had six saves three of which were “incredible” shots, the coach says.
The coach said Abi Del Castillo, Edgar Amavizca, Ricky Smith and Jose Cuevas all had good defensive games and Francisco Cruz and Tony Lopez had good offensive games.
“This was an incredible effort by the kids not to be intimidated by an opponent the caliber of Salpointe,” the coach said. “I was very pleased with the effort.”
The Bulldogs are at Buena Tuesday for a non-conference game.
