Douglas High School’s wrestling team kicked off its season Tuesday with a pair of wins over Palo Verde and Santa Rita in wrestling action at Douglas High School.

The Bulldogs beat Palo Verde 41-0 and Santa Rita 42-24.

Palo Verde had just five wrestlers; Santa Rita seven making for a fairly quick match that overcame a late start.

Kenny Cardenas (103) picked up a pair of forfeits on the day. Andre Olivas (112) finished 2-0 pinning a wrestler from Palo Verde and getting a forfeit from Santa Rita.

Jose Salinas (119) also won both his matches by forfeits.

Felipe Linares won his match at 135 by forfeit vs. Palo Verde. The Bulldogs left that weight class open vs. Santa Rita.

Nick Nunez (152) won his match by fall vs. Palo Verde and then won by forfeit vs. Santa Rita.

Robert Coronado (171) was 1-1 on the day losing by fall in overtime to Santa Rita after winning by forfeit vs. Palo Verde.

Morgan Ramirez (189) won both his matches by fall as did Edward Noriega (215).

Heavyweight Carlos Grijalva won his match by fall vs. Palo Verde and then won by forfeit against Santa Rita.

The Bulldogs were open at 125, 130, 140, 145 and 160.

Douglas’ wrestling coach Arturo Moreno said this was a good way to start the season – he just wishes he would have had more wrestlers to fill in the open weights.

The coach said the new weight restrictions are making it more difficult for all schools to field wrestlers.

Moreno said there is closer monitoring going on as to how fast and how much weight wrestlers drop.

“It’s getting harder on all programs not just ours,” he said.

The Bulldog matmen are back in action next Wednesday hosting CDO in a 7 p.m. dual match at Douglas High School.

There is a $4 per person admission fee being charged at the gate.
