TUCSON – The Douglas Lady Bulldogs had little difficulty thumping a Pusch Ridge team 6-0 in pool play at the Brandon Bean Invitational Friday.

With the win the Lady Bulldogs, 3-1, move on to the championship round where they will have a rematch with Salpointe who beat them Wednesday 2-0 in a match Douglas’ coach Angelica Chavez said her team should have won.

Against Pusch Ridge, Michelle Chavez’ goal off a Leilani Skinner assist less than a minute into the match gave the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead and got the momentum going Douglas’ way.

Kristi Cormier’s goal off a Paulina Ramos assist 26 minutes later gave Douglas a 2-0 lead at the half.

In the second half the Lady Bulldogs blew the game wide open with goals from  Skinner, Kim Cormier, Elise Urquijo and Alexis Romero.

Douglas out shot Pusch Ridge 21-0 leaving goalie Liz Clark with a lonely day in the net with no saves.

Douglas’ soccer coach Angelica Chavez said she had a much better effort from her team on Friday than she did on Wednesday in the 2-0 loss to Salpointe.

“Our passes were better and we made some good runs,” she said. “It seemed like everybody stepped up their game. I was real pleased with that.

The loss to Salpointe Wednesday was a very disapointing game for coach Chavez.

“The girls were not ready to play,” she said. “This was a very beatable team.”

Tied 0-0 at half Salpointe scored twice in the second half taking a 2-0 lead.

Coach Chavez said the first goal was a result of the defense breaking down and the second goal was a result of several Douglas players being caught out of position.

Salpointe out shot Douglas 8-3.

“We didn’t take advantage of the offensive opportunities we had and it hurt us,” the coach said. “These girls know they can play so much better. They need to understand they have to be consistent. .. It was a very frustrating loss.”

Douglas kicks off regular season play Tuesday at home against Buena. Game time is 6 p.m.
