Douglas High School’s wrestling team took on wrestling powerhouse Canyon Del Oro Wednesday in a dual match at Douglas High School.

Bulldog freshman wrestler Jeremy Rios pins his CDO opponent in 5:17 in his 130-pound match Wednesday. The Bulldogs lost the match 48-33. The DHS wrestlers have a four-way match next Wednesday in the DHS gym before hosting the Douglas Invitational next weekend.

The Bulldogs were hampered by three open weight classes in a hard fought 48-33 loss.

Kenny Cardenas (103) pinned his CDO opponent in just 59 seconds Wednesday.

Andre Olivas (112) was a 17-4 winner over his opponent having several near pin opportunities elude him.

Jose Salinas (119) was pinned in 5:20.

Freshman Jeremy Rios (130) won his match by fall in 5:17 and Felipe Linares (135) was pinned in 2:34.

Joel Bello (145) was pinned in 3:18 and Nick Nunez (152) lost his match by fall in 4:28.

Ali Andrade (160) needed just 70 seconds to pin his opponent. Morgan Ramirez (189) won his match by fall in 3:59.

Edward Noriega (215) pinned his opponent in 2:47 and heavyweight Juan Escalante was pinned in 3:01.

The Bulldogs were open at 125, 140 and 171 resulting in 18 forfeited points to the Dorados.

Douglas’ wrestling coach Arturo Moreno said his kids showed a lot of heart Wednesday.

“All the hard work they put in at practice is starting to pay off,” he said. “I thought we looked sharp tonight. We’re young and a little under developed but these kids are getting there.”

The Bulldogs are back in action again next Wednesday hosting Tucson, Buena and Catalina in a quadrangular meet which starts at 3:30 p.m. in the DHS gym.

The Douglas Invitational wrestling tournament is set to take place next Friday and Saturday in the DHS gym.
