Mike Mayo led the Apaches in scoring with 25 points, Marcus Williams followed with 17, DeAngelo Jones had 16 and Jason Holmes 14.
This game was all Cochise from the start as the Apaches led 30-13 at the midway point of the first half, 55-33 at the break and 82-46 at the midway point of the second half.
Cochise College coach Jerry Carrillo said after the game he felt this game was the best total effort he’s seen all year.
“We sustained a very good effort the entire 40 minutes,” he said.
Carrillo said his defense held South Mountain to 24.2 percent shooting the second half.
The coach said he was not really concerned as to how his players would respond from the layoff because they had four good days of practice.
“These guys are trying to submit to what were teaching them,” he said. “These guys are getting better.”
Carrillo said 6’8 freshman Jason Holmes showed why he was recruited playing a all-around good offensive game.
“We like coaching these guys and we think we can keep getting better,” he said. “We have to get better if we want to compete for a championship.”
The Apaches, 7-2 overall, 3-0 in league play, take to the road Saturday for an ACCAC game at Chandler-Gilbert. Chandler-Gilbert was 6-0 overall, 2-0 in league play going into Wednesday’s ACCAC game with Mesa.
“On the road is always tough in our league so we need to be ready to play,” he said.
Cochise hosts Eastern Arizona on Wednesday.
