Busy weekend

Friday and Saturday is  filled with activities downtown. Last night at the Gadsden Hotel, Downtown Douglas merchants including Classy, Illusions, OK Fashions, Cloz-Line, Ortega Shoes, Sportsworld, Shoe Salon, New Image, Casa Enrique, Glam  and Factory 2-U showed off their fashions in an hour-long show. DJ Midnite Image and the Special Rose also added something extra to the program. Following the Fashion Show, the Cochise College Chamber and Bi-National Choir performed(above) in concert at 7 p.m. Beginning at noon on Saturday Douglas Downtown merchants will be presenting a Christmas Extravaganza on G Avenue between 8th and 11th Streets. There will be craft vendors, a car show, Southern Arizona Auto car sale, food and fun in addition to big sidewalk sales. Performing during the day will be the Douglas High School Jazz Band and DHS Folklorico. Santa will also be on hand at Santa’s Village (Placita Del Sol) during the day.

Bringing home human rights
Protesters marched from Pirtleville to Castro Park Wednesday to commemorate  the 60th anniversary of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Border and immigrant communities and local community groups, youth, and religious leaders from southern Arizona, participated in “Bringing Home Human Rights” walks in Douglas and Tucson. As part of celebrating this sixty year anniversary, participants will call for an end to the enforcement only approach to border and immigration policy that imposes dire social, human, and environmental costs across the border region. Border Action Network and their supporters will be taking 100 steps and more to ensure that president-elect Obama and his new administration remain focused on their promise of immigration reform in the first 100 days of office and are properly equipped with clear and sensible recommendations from those that live day to day with their policy decisions.
