No resolution on Superintendent issue due to lack of quorum

Published/Last Modified on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 9:47 AM MST

All of the drama concerning the status of Douglas Unified School District Superintendent Earl Pettit ended with a thud Monday evening when the meeting to discuss his future had to be cancelled because there wasn’t a quorum.

Board President Charles Hoyack and member Patricia Lopez were at the meeting. Danny Ortega, Jr., and Gloria Varela both were excused due to illness in the family. Art Estrada was scheduled to attend, but had not yet made the meeting by the 6 p.m. deadline Hoyack placed on the start time. The meeting was originally scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

Since there was not a quorum (a majority of board members present), no action could be taken.

Since no action was taken, the meeting could not be rescheduled, so it is unclear whether the board will try to meet again before the holiday, or wait until after the New Year when the new board is in place.

Approximately 30 people were in attendance at the meeting.

" It's quite disheartening to see such a simple matter escalate to a game of pointing fingers. The key to and example to show to the youth of Douglas starts with the parents, and will only continue with parent involvement. Members of the board are parents, and have lives to lead as well. I really don't think it was a matter of "running" where do you RUN TO in Douglas?? Compassion, understanding, integrity, and TEAM work seems to be a concept that's yet to be grasped in the community. Small town "beefs" need to be left at the door. Focus on one task at a time, and quit making this town a reason to roll your eyes, if you don't care, why will your children?? "

" Amusing letter to Stevenson staff. Great way to try to get the dogs off your back. At the same time do you realize this is an example of why people think of Stevenson the way they do. I guess the 30 or so people that make up this staff are the only ones in the district that deserve your thanks and holiday greetings. "

" Why did the board hire such a COLD and Blank Face man for a Superintendent. He does not greet the people, when you walk by him he looks straight ahead as if your invisable. He looks down at you just in the way he speaks. Look and study him, something fishy is with this guy. Something is not right. "

" Have you asked a question to yourselves? Are all of you perfect. I think that if these board members didn't showed up for the meeting was maybe because they didn't want to get involved now that their time is almost over. As for Mr. Pettit leave him alone so he can consentrate more on what his duties are like I said no body is perfect and I think we need to give him a chance because we all know that this school district is a mess of course not includig the schools that are performing but the rest of the schools need help and he is willing to do so. The schools that are performing have to be involved because they are part of the school district. Douglas residents have a very understanding and humnble heart and we need to give this man a chance because like I said NOBODY IS PERFECT! THINK OF OUR CHILDREN PLEASE PEOPLE WE REALLY NEED THIS RESTRUCTURNING CHANGE! Happy holidays! "

" The Board is responsible for this mess and needs to clean it up. You still have timeleft in the month to make a miracle happen. Get rid of this man and his disgraceful gang and take care of the children. You still have time. "

" Then what was the purpose of having this meeting if none of the Board Members were going to attend. This should be very important to them as to us. Something should be done immediately. Have any of you looked at this superintendent's past history? Maybe you should have done that before hiring him. "

Concerned Again wrote on Dec 17, 2008 5:55 PM:

" It is very disappointing that the Boards members besides Varela (in Tucson) did not meet. Are you not representing the people who voted for you or are you lame ducks and suddenly do not care? Mr. Estrada and Mr. Ortega shame on both of you for disrespecting the people who voted you onto the Board. You both talk out of the side of your mouth as far as I am concerned and have lost a lot of respect from a lot of people I know. Shame on you both. Now go run and hide.. your "time" is done. "

" I am just curious as to why Mr. Estrada was not at the meeting. As an elected official, he had an obligation to the community to be present. "

" I am hopeful that this drama is over and the schools can get back to work improving our schools. "

" I feel that it is a disgrace that Art Estrada did not have the decency to show up. You were elected to this position to be a voice for the students and you have let them down. I guess it is good riddance to a board member that really didn't care for his position. You had on tough call to make and you RAN. "
