The man was escorted to the vehicle secondary inspection area where officers conducted an intensive search with the assistance of a narcotic detector dog. The dog alerted the officers to the tires.
A non-intrusive imaging system scan revealed anomalies in all four tires.
The tires contained metal collars that were securely fastened to the rims allowing the tires to be properly inflated. All compartments contained tightly compressed marijuana. A total of 156 pounds of marijuana was removed.
On Monday at about 8:15 a.m., a 40-year-old man also identified as a Mexican national was driving a tan 1992 Ford Explorer. An officer screening travelers waiting to enter the U.S. selected him and his vehicle for inspection.
Officers noted discrepancies in the spare tire area. The drug detector dog alerted to the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. A total of 38 pounds of marijuana was removed from the spare tire.
At about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, an officer screening travelers entering in from Mexico encountered a 28-year-old U.S. citizen in the pedestrian area.
The officer noticed the man had bulges around his pockets.
The bulges turned out to be four packages of marijuana taped to his legs under his pants, which had a total weight of five pounds.
